What are the ESOS Regulations 2014?

Government established ESOS to implement Article 8 (4 to 6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU). The ESOS Regulations 2014 give effect to the scheme.

Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory energy assessment program for companies in the UK. The Environment Agency is responsible for driving the scheme through.

Companies that qualify under the guidelines must carry out energy assessments every 4 years. The purpose is to identify ways to reduce energy consumption. The assessments consist of audits of the energy used by the companies buildings, industrial processes and transport.

Organisations must notify the Environment Agency by 5 December 2015 that they have complied with their ESOS obligations.

There are many ways to save energy in the workplace. From LED office lighting to draft proofing and insulation. One of the biggest energy consumers in any manufacturing business is the Plant and Equipment on the shop floor. Individual metering can be added to each piece of equipment. This breaks down your energy consumption very accurately so you can see where the most energy is being consumed. This in turn allows you to better manage those machines to reduce the energy they consume during operation and at rest.

Compressed air systems, if not properly maintained can waste up to 40% of the energy they consume. If you have a large compressed air system, this could present a significant opportunity to save money on your energy. Introducing a regular compressed air leak survey can pay dividends. Introduce a scheduled annual survey of your compressed air system and use this as part part of your ESOS compliance if you are not exempt.

Note that some companies will be exempt from ESOS but it may still be worthwhile conducting an Energy Survey or Compressed Air Leak Survey to cut your energy bills and save money.
